Whether you are attempting to control one dog or multiple dogs, having complete control is of utmost importance.  Even more true during training exercises or when other dogs or distractions are present.

Two exceptional tools that give you the ability to easily maintain control of your dog (or dogs), regardless of the environment, are tabs and / or couplers (for multiple dogs). Depending on your circumstances, both can be used in conjunction with a standard dog leash. While training, it is often recommended that you keep a tab connected to your dog's collar, giving you the ability to easily correct behaviors. In this blog, we’ll explore the differences and uses of both of these outstanding pieces of handling equipment.

Understanding Dog Tabs

New to the idea of using a dog tab? While used frequently in the professional dog training world, dog tabs may be somewhat unfamiliar to the average owner. Designed to be either handheld or for off-leash use, these ultra-short pieces typically measure no more than seven inches in length.

Handheld dog tabs are primarily used to keep dogs close to their owner, ensuring maximum control in training situations or when walking through high-traffic areas. Alternatively, snap tabs are used in a variety of applications to quickly transition from on-leash to off-leash and vice versa. Rather than having to detach or reattach a leash at the collar or harness point, tabs serve as an extender to help rapidly regain control of your dog.

Understanding the Use of Dog Couplers

Owners looking for an effective solution to help them walk two dogs at once will appreciate the control and ease of use of a dog coupler. Dog couplers were created to allow an individual to walk two dogs with a single leash using the same connection point. Instead of having to wrestle with multiple leashes, which can become tangled and hard to control, a coupler encourages dogs to walk side-by-side with almost no effort.

Dog couplers are made using sturdy standard bolt snaps and a sturdy material, which helps control large and strong dogs. This add-on is wonderful for training and helps discourage pulling while on walks or in training environments.

Differences & Similarities Between Dog Tabs and Dog Couplers

The main difference between dog tabs and dog couplers is that a tab is a training tool, used on one dog at a time, while a coupler is intended as a convenient tool for handlers and dog walkers - to maintain the control of two dogs. Additionally, dog tabs are available in several different styles (e.g., handle tabs and pull tabs), whereas couplers are always intended to connect multiple dogs to a single leash - reducing tangles, hazards, and potential trouble.

As for their similarities, they are both useful tools and are often made out of the same materials (leather, Biothane or nylon, with sturdy bolt snaps). To accommodate your dog’s size, couplers and tabs can be purchased in varying widths and lengths. Always review the product description in order to select the right size for you and your best friend.
